Mganja and its surroundings are located in a very poor rural area of Malawi, about 3 hours from the capital Lilongwe. In Mganja there was only elementary school and girls who wanted (and were able) to continue their secondary education had to move to other communities. The most common result was that they returned pregnant and without an academic degree, closing once again the circle of poverty, as they had to give up their studies and take care of the survival of their babies.

A Dutch-Malawian foundation (Nazareth Foundation Malawi) is building a secondary school for girls, Tiyende College, consisting of several high quality classroom buildings, administration, library, latrines, and teachers' housing. The first class is already underway, and new classes will be added each year. As a novelty, this school will have a nursery so that mothers can continue studying while their children are being cared for.

This area is not served by the electricity grid. EKI Foundation has installed a solar photovoltaic plant that will provide clean and reliable electricity 24/7 to all school buildings, teachers' housing and outdoor security lights.
