Bo Neonatal Hospital Project , Sierra Leone

The Neonatal Unit at the Government Hospital of Bo, in Sierra Leone, faces significant challenges due to frequent and prolonged power outages from the grid, which affect the availability of essential equipment such as incubators and oxygen concentrators. Furthermore, the hospital's backup generator is frequently inoperable.

The Liebreich Foundation and Dr Niall Conroy have been regular supporters of the neonatal unit. In particular, four years ago the Liebreich Foundation provided a solar energy system to help solve the unit's power supply problems. Unfortunately, the system ceased functioning shortly after installation due to design and maintenance issues.

In response to a request from the Liebreich Foundation, EKI installed a new, reliable solar power system in September 2023. The new system is monitored and controlled in real-time by EKI's technical department in Getxo, Spain. This ensures prompt issue resolution and proper system operation.

A reliable power supply is essential for caring for premature or critically ill infants. The new installation has significantly contributed to a reduction in infant mortality rates.

  • NGO:Liebreich Foundation
  • Installation: 72 panels of 315W each and 20 reused panels of 260W (total 27.9 KWp), 3 inverters of 10 KVA each (total 30 KVA), 5 lithium batteries of 15.4 KWH each
  • Impact:This improvement provides essential, reliable power for the neonatal unit, reducing infant mortality and enhancing medical care.
